EU is changing the roaming rates again

From the first of July the inhabitans of the European Union that are sending texts or are using internet on their phones in a different European country will benefit of large price reductions. Again the EU is changing the roaming rates.

The EU is hoping to stop the exorbitant bills people often get when they come back home from their vacation.

The new rates will be implemented from the first of July. This means that the amount for a roaming SMS text will become 11 euro cent instead of 28 euro cent. That is almost a reduction of 50%. But other rates will also be decreased, but a couple of years later. Like for instance, calling or receiving calls at your vacation address. From July 2011 the rates for calling will change from 46 euro cent to about 35 eurocent per minute. It will cost you not 22, but 11 euro cent when you receive a call.

Not the first time

This is not the first time the roaming rates have been the topic of discussion. A couple of months ago the Dutch OPTA found the rates too high and almost all Dutch operators changed their rates. But also the EU has forced the reduction of prices in the past. From the first of November 2007 a maximum rate was established for making calls from another country.
