MWC 2010: Nokia and Intel announce new MeeGo mobile platform

Nokia and Intel have surprised the electronics world by announcing MeeGo; a fusion of Maemo and Moblin. The OS has to run on various 'mobile devices'.

The MeeGo is a fusion of Maemo and Moblin and is meant for a series of mobiledevices as netbooks, tablets, media phones and connected TV's. The platform is based on Linux.

MeeGo

Moreover this is not the end of Maemo and Moblin. This means that Meego Apps are applicable to a Maemo device and vice versa. It is not yet clear what added value the MeeGo has to the mobile platform market. The advantage is mostly to the developers; they only have to write an application once to serve more than one platform at the same time. The mutual exchangeability has been realized by applying the Qt framework.

Ecosystem

MeeGo will be available in the second half of 2010 and will need an ecosystem of apps and support. Whether developers are waiting to develop for yet another platform is the question.
