EU is considering a tax for phones with GPS and Mobile TV

Financial crisis or not, the European Union is considering a tax for phones with a GPS receiver and with Mobile TV. For phones with GPS they are thinking of a tax of 3,7 procent and phones with Mobile TV will get possibly a tax of up to 14 procent.

The European Union is considering the extra taxes because mobile phones nowadays can do more than just making a call. For GPS and television receivers an adjusted rate is counting than for other mobile phones. A permanent decision is not yet taken, but is expected in the next six months.

Producers of mobile phones are against this new measure. Both Sony Ericsson and Nokia are saying that extra taxes are very foolish in this economic difficult times.

Import tax camera phones
Last year there was some noise around phones with built-in camera. The EU wanted an extra import tax, because most of the phones can also make videos. They didn't proceed with this eventually, because the call function is seen as the primarily function of a mobile phone.
