The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra might as well have been called the Note 22 Ultra. At first glance, it has little to do with a Galaxy S phone. The king is dead, long live the king!

The Galaxy Note series has officially come to an end with the arrival of this S22 Ultra. Although it looks more like the successor to the Note 20 Ultra than the S21 Ultra. But enough about that. Because the S22 Ultra is so much more than a name. It is the very best that Samsung currently has to offer. From screen to camera, from pen to battery. And it's not even absurdly expensive. For example, it's more affordable than the Note 20 Ultra was at the time.

Integrated S Pen

Let's start with the screen. Samsung is applying its very latest LTPO panel. One with minimum 1 and maximum 120Hz screen refresh. Energy efficient and smooth when needed. Bright too because with a peak brightness of 1750 nits it is the brightest screen Samsung ever put in a phone. Like its predecessor, the screen recognizes the S Pen but a bit faster. The delay between touch and drawing is a negligible 2.8 microseconds. From an already smooth 7ms first. Writing feels like writing on real paper. This time, you keep the pen in the device itself. Besides writing, you can also use it to operate the S22 Ultra. Use Air Actions to flip through pages, zoom in on photos and increase the volume.

Nightography camera

Like its predecessor(s), the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 108MP camera system consisting of 4 cameras. There is an ultra-wide-angle lens and 2 telephoto lenses with 3 and 10x zoom respectively. What is new is the improved AI that makes zooming a lot sharper. Night photography has also been taken in hand thanks to Super Clear Glass for the lens. This reduces lens flare at dusk. Videos are now even smoother and photos with people in them sharper because the Ultra can focus on 10 different faces at once.

Finally some serious fast charging

Finally Samsung has done something about fast battery charging. Instead of using 25 Watts, the S22 Ultra can be quickly charged at a whopping 45 Watts. You will have to purchase the 45W Power Adapter separately though because it is missing from the box. The 5000 mAh has enough capacity for over a day of use and can also be charged wirelessly. You can even charge others wirelessly with it, also called Wireless PowerShare. The front and back consist of Gorilla Glass Victus+ held tightly together by an Armor Aluminum frame resulting in an IP68 waterproof phone. On the back, unfortunately, you won't find the telling Contour Cut camera layout of previous S models. Samsung has instead placed the individual lenses loose on the back it seems. Tastes differ.
