“A worthy flagship?”

·

Nokia 8 review: a worthy flagship? Nokia released a device in almost every segment last year and the top model is the Nokia 8. It is now available for less than 500 Euros and seems to offer quite a bit of value for money. High time to find out. The Nokia 8 has a 5.3 inch screen with Quad HD resolution. Nokia has never released a phone with such a high screen resolution before. In total, the Nokia 8 has three cameras, each with a 13 megapixel sensor. Furthermore, the camera is equipped with a Snapdragon 835 processor and 4 GB working memory.

Nokia 8 product details

The Nokia 8 is the first real flagship of Nokia's resurrection. Next to a beautiful and refined appearance, it is equipped with a number of impressive cameras with Zeiss lenses. We will explain here what you can use them for in practice and how the camera tries to help you further in your daily life.

High quality aluminum housing

According to HMD Global, the Nokia 8 is all about three things: a high-quality aluminum body, a powerful and clean Android and multiple high-end cameras with clear scythe lenses. All this seems to have worked at first glance. The body is made of one block of 6000 series aluminum and with an average of 7.3 millimeters nice and thin. HMD Global, the maker of the Nokia 8, has taken his time in finishing it. The finishing of a single case consists of no less than 40 different steps, including anodizing and polishing. For the glossy versions, this even takes 20 hours. Another nice thing is that the camera protrudes at a minimum (only 0.4 millimeters), giving you a reasonably smooth whole that doesn't wobble when you put it away.

The power of Android One and Snapdragon

To put down the most powerful performance, the bare Android One has been chosen. This is known for the lack of bloatware which makes your device unnecessarily slower. You have all the possibilities to install apps and set things up. The power comes from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor that we also find in other high-end flagships. For those other devices you soon pay 800 euros, with this Nokia 8 the damage is limited(er). Another big advantage of the Snapdragon 835 is that it supports QuickCharge 3.0. This fast charging technique ensures that a battery quickly has some charge to get through the day.

Main Nokia 8 specifications

  • Bright 5.3 inch IPS with sharp 2K resolution
  • 13 MP Dual Image-Fusion camera with Zeiss lens and automatic scene detection
  • One 13 MP camera at the front with wide-angle lens
  • With 4G support (LTE Cat. 9)
  • Powerful Qualcomm processor (Snapdragon 835) at up to 2.5 GHz
  • Use 2 SIM cards thanks to DualSIM support
  • Memory card slot for easy self-expansion (up to 256 GB)

Waterproof with a warning

In the camera area, the Nokia 8 has two different cameras on the back that work as one. And it doesn't stop there, the front and rear cameras also work together so that you can shoot so-called bothies thanks to the Dual-Sight function in the camera app. All cameras are equipped with Zeiss lenses that are known for their brightness. All cameras shoot in up to 13 megapixels and the front has a wide angle lens so that not only you but also your friends fit in the picture. In theory at least because what HMD Global 'wide angle' turns out to be a viewing angle of 78.4° which is not very wide. Another point to pay attention to is its water resistance. The Nokia 8 does have an IP54 rating, but that doesn't make it completely waterproof, but splashproof. Full immersion is not recommended.

Pro and cons Nokia 8

  • Beautiful aluminum look
  • Powerful Android One GSM
  • Premium Zeiss cameras
  • Clear and sharp screen
  • Splash proof is not the same as waterproof
