Google releases Android 15, but not for you
Google started as a search engine but now also brings its own hardware to the market. This includes phones, tablets, true wireless earbuds, and smart speakers. Most of these devices run Android, which Google also develops.
Nexus
Google showed early interest in releasing its hardware. In 2010, the Nexus One was released in partnership with HTC. Several more models would come out in the Nexus line, made by HTC, LG, or Samsung.
Pixel
In late 2016, Google said goodbye to the Nexus name, and phones were now released under the name Pixel. Google designed the phones, and HTC made them. Not long after, Google took over HTC's phone division, after which everything could be developed and produced in-house.
Tensor chip
In addition to making phones, Google also expressed interest in developing processors. These are marketed under the name Tensor and are only used by Google. The first Tensor was released in 2016 and intended for server use.
The Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) was used to accelerate AI functions. The first Tensor for use in a smartphone saw the light of day in 2021 with the introduction of the Pixel 6, which was also optimized to handle AI tasks faster.
Advantages Pixel phones
Google's phones particularly excel in their cameras. For this, Google uses "Computational Photography". This uses various algorithms to improve the picture quality. Google's most famous algorithm is HDR+. This merges several images into one with the help of an algorithm. This algorithm relies very much on machine learning, something the Tensor chip excels at.
Another advantage of a Pixel phone is the fast Android updates. Google is the publisher of Android, and after a new version is released, Pixel phones are the first to receive it. Also, as a Pixel owner, you can sign up to receive early Android previews, should you wish. These often still contain bugs, but they offer a unique early look at what's to come.
Pixel phones are otherwise quite affordable compared to competitors' flagships. Google, of course, has another significant revenue source besides phones: ads on its search engine. Those looking for a competitively priced iPhone alternative should look at Google's offering.
