Halloween in the Netherlands
Halloween is traditionally celebrated on the evening of Oct. 31, the day before All Saints' Day (Nov. 1). The holiday has come over from the United States where pumpkins are hollowed out and candy is handed out to children. Scares are part of it and so you may scare children, but keep it neat.
In some parts of the Netherlands, it is common for children to go door-to-door in disguise at night to collect candy. This is also called trick-or-treating. In other parts of the Netherlands, people do not celebrate Halloween but St. Martin's Day, when children also go by the door. This time with a lantern but also with the goal of collecting as much candy as possible. Sint Maarten takes place on November 11.
