A feature phone is the type of phone that was common before the smartphone was introduced. It is a mobile phone with numerous functions. That can be anything from built-in FM radio, a camera to browsing the Internet. The price varies from a few tens to almost 100 euros for the most elaborate.
Because of the enormous popularity of smartphones, we see featurephones less and less often. Many manufacturers have stopped making them. It is mainly HMD Global that releases models under the Nokia name and TCL with Alcatel. Senior phones are a subcategory of feature phones. The extra functions in addition to calling and sending messages are specifically aimed at this target group. Feature phones are also very suitable as festival phones. Leave your expensive smartphone at home and still stay in touch with everyone. There are even models with a built-in camera, although this is not a requirement.
Featurephone with WhatsApp
Finding a feature phone that supports WhatsApp is a tricky search. The only one available is the Nokia 8110 4G. WhatsApp is also available (anno 2019) for Android, iPhone and Windows Phone (until the end of 2019). In the past, it was also available for S40, which many Nokia feature phones used. Support for this will cease in 2018.
A WhatsApp version for the KaiOS platform was also released in mid-2018. Disadvantage is that not every phone with KaiOS can install it just like that. The manufacturer seems to have to make the necessary adjustments. After earlier JioPhone did so (in 2018) HMD Global followed in 2019 with support for the Nokia 8110 4G.
If you don't want to do that, you have to be patient on featurephones running on Android; Android Go would be a suitable candidate for this. Those who want to use WhatsApp on a simple phone can also check out budget smartphones.
