UPnP is mainly used in home networks for data exchange, communication and entertainment. For example, Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's Playstation 3 work with UPnP. UPnP-enabled mobile phones can play videos, music and photos on compatible TVs over the home media network.
UPnP uses HTTP over UDP and is not standardized, it is only described in an Internet-Draft which has been running since 2001. In addition, UPnP does not have a simple authentication protol. As a result, UPnP devices carry the necessary security risks. This is why the UPnP option is disabled by default on many of these devices.
