iOS is the second largest mobile operating system after Google's Android. Apple uses version numbers to indicate the differences even though the first version of iOS is version 4.0. Before that the operating system was called iPhone OS but in 2010 the name iOS was introduced. Updates are made available to compatible devices free of charge. Apple is known to support products for a long time to come, unlike Android smartphones where there are more dependencies. In theory, this makes iPhones and iPads safer to use.
