A power bank is a battery with a USB port. The sole purpose of a power bank is to charge another device. Think of a smartphone, a tablet or wireless earbuds. You have powerbanks in all sizes, from large to small. What to look for when buying one we explain here.
Choose the right capacity
Typically, the larger the power bank, the larger the battery it contains. We express the size of a battery in mAh; milliampere hours. The higher this number, the more power will fit in the power bank. More convenient is to express the size of the power bank in how many times you can charge your phone with it. Use the following table here:
- To 5,000 mAh: charge your phone once
- To 10,000 mAh: charge your phone 2x
- To 20,000 mAh: charge your phone 4x or charge your tablet 1.5x
- From 25,000 mAh: Charge multiple devices
Of course, you don't want to spend too long on the charger, even if it is mobile itself. Therefore, choose a charger that matches your smartphone. If your smartphone uses one of the following fast-charging technologies, then it is advisable to buy a power bank that supports it;
- Qualcomm Quick Charge
- Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge
- Oppo/OnePlus SuperVOOC
Please note that a compatible USB cable must be used with this type of fast charging technology. This is because of the higher powers and then certain requirements apply to the cable.
Tips when picking a power bank
Want to be able to charge multiple devices simultaneously? Then choose a powerbank with at least 2 USB ports. Do you also want to be able to charge older devices? Then make sure your powerbank also has a USB-A port, which is a better fit for older cables. Otherwise, opt for USB-C.
Want to go through life even more mobile? Then look for powerbanks with wireless charging. You then place your phone on the powerbank to charge it. That saves on cables. Provided your mobile phone supports it, of course.
