Samsung Cell Phones

Samsung is a conglomerate of which Samsung Electronics is the best known. That business unit is responsible for consumer electronics including mobile phones, TVs, household appliances and chips. For us, the 'Telecommunications' division is most interesting because they are responsible for mobile phones, Galaxy smartphones, Galaxy Tab tablets and Gear smartwatches.

Samsung history

Samsung may be known for its Galaxy smartphones in recent years, but it has been making mobile phones since 1988. They were only available in South Korea and were not very reliable at first. This made it difficult for Samsung to compete with names such as Nokia and Motorola. In the 1990s Samsung also withdrew from mobile telephony altogether. It would take until 1998 before the first Samsung phones were released in Europe. Samsung's strategy for 2010 consisted of doing everything; all designs and all operating systems. After 2010 and the launch of the first Galaxy S, the company started to focus mainly on Android with so-called full touchscreen phones.

Samsung Galaxy series

Samsung had the most success with its Galaxy series; phones and other devices running under Google's Android operating system. After some reorganizations that now consist of the following series and are focused on;

• Galaxy A - Stands for 'Alpha' and consists of premium mid-range models
• Galaxy J - Stands for 'Joy' and are mostly affordable mid-range models (merged into the Galaxy A series in 2019)
• Galaxy M - Stands for 'Millenial' and is a mid-range series with a low price
• Galaxy Note - Big highend phablet models
• Galaxy S - stands for 'Super Smart' and is the high-end flagship series
• Galaxy Xcover - Robust and waterproof mid-range models
• Galaxy Y - stands for 'Young' and consists of small and inexpensive entry-level models
• Galaxy Fold - Foldable ultra premium models

Models from the Galaxy C, Galaxy E (Elegant) and Galaxy On series never came out. Before Samsung used the above series letters, it often released phones with full names such as 'Grand', 'Core', 'Star' and 'Mini'. Around 2014/2015, it switched to a single letter followed by a number corresponding to the generation. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is the 9th generation of the S-series. By the way, that kite only doesn't apply to the Galaxy Note-series because the number 6 has been skipped there. That was done to match the Galaxy S-series.

Note Edge and Galaxy Round

Because Samsung also makes its own screens, we often see the most innovative screens at Samsung. Think of the curved Galaxy Round and the Galaxy Note Edge curved on one side. Although these models were not sold much themselves, the technology behind them meant a lot to the industry. Especially the side curved edge models would not only become very popular with Samsung; other manufacturers also applied them. Since 2018 Samsung announced a phone screen that can be closed. The first models with those screens are expected in 2019.
