MediaTek announces Dimensity 9400 chip, may be coming in Samsung Galaxy S25

Normally, we pay little attention here to product announcements from phone processor manufacturer MediaTek. We normally find this Taiwanese company's chipsets in mid-range phones and some premium mid-range models. But the announced Dimensity 9400 is possibly going to be a big hit.

Indeed, there are rumors that Samsung is opting for the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processor for use in the Galaxy S25 series. This is because Samsung fails to make enough copies of the Exynos 2500 chip and because Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is too expensive.

Built on TSMC's 3nm process (N3E), the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 offers 35% better single-core performance and 28% better multi-core than its predecessor. The GPU is even more than 40% more powerful, thanks in part to the ARM Immortalis-G925. The Dimensity 9400 consists of;

  • 1 ARM Cortex-X925 core at up to 3.62 GHz
  • 3 ARM Cortex-X4 cores
  • 4 ARM Cortex-A720 cores

Where the Dimensity 9400 is truly brilliant in terms of AI. MediaTek's 8th generation NPU can handle large language models up to 80% faster while consuming 35% less power than the Dimensity 9300. That will really appeal to manufacturers like Samsung who are currently betting heavily on AI.

Samsung and MediaTek

Samsung is no stranger to using a MediaTek processor. We find a MediaTek in the simple Galaxy A06, the mid-range Galaxy A34 5G and the rugged Galaxy XCover 7.

For high-end smartphones, Samsung has not yet ventured into MediaTek. The same is not true for tablets, however. The recently announced Galaxy Tab S10+ and S10 Ultra use the most powerful MediaTek Dimensity chipset to date. So Samsung and MediaTek are no strangers to each other.
