It was another long sit yesterday, an hour and a half long Apple Keynote. Despite that long duration, Apple failed to mention a few things about the new iPhone 16 series. You can read them here.
It was a lot about Apple Intelligence during Apple Glow Up event. And a lot has been written about that. Including that Europe can wait a while for it. That much is clear. But a few more things caught our eye. Here are the four most important things Apple "forgot" to tell us.
1. iPhone 16 and 16 Plus still have 60Hz screen
All progress notwithstanding, you still get a slow 60Hz screen on your nearly thousand dollar phone. Unacceptable as far as we're concerned and purely designed to steer you to the (even) more expensive Pro. There is no technical reason not to apply 120Hz (or even 90Hz), the more powerful A18 chip would handle it just fine.
2. All iPhone 16 models have 8GB of RAM memory
To make Apple Intelligence possible, a lot of RAM memory is needed. At least 8GB which is a lot by iPhone standards. Interestingly, both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro feature this number. In Europe we still have to wait a while for Apple Intelligence, but we also benefit from more RAM memory. For example, with large apps and quickly switching between them.
3. iPhone 16 can charge wirelessly faster than wired
The iPhone 16 Pro was expected to get faster wired charging. That rumor did not hold true. However, all iPhone 16 models do get faster wireless charging; up to 25 watts via the separate MagSafe charger. This creates the odd situation of the iPhone 16 getting faster wireless charging than wired.
Again, there is no technical reason for this. Only an economic one. Apple would rather sell you a more expensive MagSafe charger than a cheaper adapter.
4. WiFi 7 compatible
It's not all doom and gloom. In fact, Apple also forgot to mention a new feature; support for WiFi 7. Those who have such a router at home can enjoy faster WiFi from now on. Although in practice this will not be so bad since WiFi 7 has improvements mainly for business use. For example, WiFi 7, also called IEEE 802.11be, makes it possible to work with multiple clients than before.
