After some delay, Google has finally finished Android 15. The code of Android "Vanilla Ice Cream" is ready in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) as of today. It is now up to manufacturers to start working with it.
Normally, Google announces a fresh Android version at the same time as new Pixel phones. But the Pixel 9 series came out with Android 14 which is now a year old. Android 15 was still a while away until today. Unfortunately, you as a user will have to be patient even longer.
Indeed, it is now the clean task for manufacturers to get to work with Android 15. They need to update their shell, aka UI. How long it will then be before you have Android 15 on your phone is hard to say. It could take weeks, maybe months.
These phones get Android 15 first
Google announced on its blog that select Pixel phones will receive the Android 15 upgrade within a few weeks. Phones from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo and Xiaomi will follow in the coming months.
Google has mainly focused on improving these points with Android 15;
- Developer experience
- Typography and internationalization
- Camera and media
- User experience
- Privacy and security
For user in particular, the improvements to the user experience, the interface, are the most visible. For example, it becomes easier for foldables to take full advantage of the larger screen by saving split-screen app combinations.
Android 15 QPR
Those who can't wait and already want to get started with Android 15 can download and install the latest QPR beta. You can only do this if you are signed up for the QPR beta program. This Quarterly Platform Release is also what Google has placed in AOSP which makes the chances of bugs lower than other betas.
