Apple is increasingly unsuccessful at countering iPhone leaks. Every year information leaks out, mostly correct as it turns out afterwards. But it also goes wrong sometimes. Such was the case this year. These were the three most notable rumors that turned out to be completely false.
iPhone rumors come in all shapes and sizes. But what matters most is the source. Reliable "leakers" with a solid track record are most often right. Although sometimes things go wrong. For example, retrospective leaker Sonny Dickson hit the mark with the future iPhone 16 colors.
1. iPhone 16 colors
The only thing Sonny had correct was that there would be a white, black, blue, green and pink iPhone 16 coming out. But the final hue does not at all match what every Apple website posted prior to the launch. Possibly to the delight of the public, as the colors published by Sonny were disparaged everywhere.
And even with the iPhone 16 Pro, the final colors turned out to be different. Especially the brown version, which Apple calls "Desert Titanium. In reality, that one looks a lot more stylish than what Sonny Dickson showed earlier.
2. Wired fast charging
Quite late the rumor emerged that the iPhone 16 Pro would finally get real fast charging. We mean faster than the current 20 watts. The specific rumor talked about wired fast charging as much as 40 Watts; a welcome doubling.
The rumor eventually proved incorrect. The wireless charging speed did go up slightly; from 20 to 25W. This creates the strange reality that the iPhone 16 series can charge wirelessly faster than wired.
The subsequently inaccurate rumor came from the Chinese website ITHome. They often have dubious claims about unannounced products.
3. iPhone 16 Pro with 2 TB of storage
Apple is always quite frugal in handing out memory. Despite costing little to buy in. Entry-level 128 GB for a Pro smartphone we think is a bit meager, although you can also opt for more. Which, of course, costs more money. A lot more money. And with the iPhone Pro and Pro Max, you can previously go as high as 1 TB.
According to a Korean leaker, the limit for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max would be increased to 2 TB. In itself not a crazy thought, after all, the iPad Pro is also available in that configuration. And yet Apple did not announce this memory option, and the maximum remains 1 TB. Still a lot as far as we're concerned.
A lot of rumors correct as well
You might now get the idea that all rumors turned out to be untrue but there were plenty that turned out to be correct. For example, the iPhone 16 did indeed get a touch-sensitive camera button and the iPhone 16 Pro got a larger screen with a 5x zoom camera. The iPhone 16's vertical cameras also proved correct.
All nice and well but after the iPhone 16 is in stores we will start looking for iPhone 17 rumors in advance. And once again, we are watching these with suspicion.
