Nokia XR20 announced: rugged with 4 years of updates

HMD Global has announced a new Nokia smartphone that can take a beating. The Nokia XR20 is rugged, waterproof and will receive updates for years to come.

HMD Global gives the Nokia XR20 the following promise: 4 years of monthly security updates, 3 years of Android upgrades and a 3-year extended warranty. With this, the XR20 seems to be able to easily last several years. But it first has to survive those years. For that the casing is made robust as well as water- and dust-resistant.

Never before has HMD Global announced such a robust smartphone. The Nokia XR20 gets a MIL-STD-810H housing with IP68 rating. This makes it drop-proof up to 1.8 meters, waterproof for 1 hour and resistant to temperatures ranging from -20 to 55°C. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

Nokia XR20 specifications, price and availability

The presence of 5G makes it life-proof. HMD Global has used a Snapdragon 480 processor for this with a choice of 4/64GB or 6/128GB of RAM/storage memory. On the back we find a dual camera: 48 and 13MP with Zeiss lenses. On the front a 8MP camera is used. The battery has a capacity of 4630 mAh and can be charged wirelessly and wired at 15 and 18 watts respectively.

The XR20 comes with Android 11 out of the box and will get at least 3 Android upgrades with monthly security updates for the next 4 years. That should make the 499 price tag a bit more reasonable. What doesn't help (but does the environment) is that a charger is missing from the box. You can buy one separately from Nokia. HMD Global promises to donate the proceeds to Clear Rivers, a nonprofit organization that combats plastic pollution. The XR20 will be available in stores from the end of August in the colors Ultra Blue and Granite Gray.
