It has been around for a while and is already supported in other countries, but Vodafone will now also support the electronic SIM card in the Netherlands. As a result, customers no longer have to romp around with plastic SIM cards. Provided your phone supports it of course.
The eSIM is the successor of the plastic SIM card. It has been getting smaller and smaller in recent years but still takes up a lot of space in your smartphone. A pity because that space could also be used for a larger battery. The eSIM is a small chip built into your smartphone. You can easily switch subscriptions via a menu. The condition is that you have a telephone with eSIM.
Vodafone is not the first in the Netherlands to support eSIM. T-Mobile preceded them. We are now waiting for KPN to announce that it will offer support for embedded SIM (eSIM) sometime in 2020. Some phones with eSIM are the iPhone 11, Google Pixel 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip. In addition to eSIM, these phones also have a slot for a physical SIM card. This makes them in fact dual SIM phones. Combine a private with a business subscription or use a separate data subscription. Also abroad, eSIM offers advantages because you can take out a local subscription for roaming via your phone.
Physical sim card remains
The fact that Vodafone Netherlands will now support the eSIM does not mean that it will say goodbye to the physical SIM card. It will simply remain available. Eventually we will probably say goodbye to the plastic SIM card, but that will take years.
