Google has announced the long-awaited Pixel 8a. This happened even before the Google I/O event kicked off, making it earlier than expected. The device offers improved performance, especially in terms of AI, and gets a slightly higher starting price.
The Google Pixel 8a looks like a formidable mid-range phone on paper. The device features the same power source as the more expensive Pixel 8 Pro; the Tensor G3. It enables various AI applications such as Circle-to-search, Best Take and Audio Magic Eraser.
Other improvements over the Pixel 7a are the smoother 120Hz screen, slightly larger battery and the fact that the selfie camera can now record 4K video. Staying the same are the 64+13MP cameras and the Gorilla Glass 3 up front.
Google AI
Built into the camera app by default are features such as "Best Take. Ideal for using the best version of everyone during a group photo. That way no one ever has their eyes closed, or that they are not looking into the lens. Just don't let Kate Middleton hear about this.
You will also find "Magic Editor" and "Audio Magic Eraser" that allow you to edit existing photos or filter out audio from video.
Four colors
The Google Pixel 8a comes out in about four colors including the familiar Porcelain (white), Obsidian (black) and the now familiar Bay (blue). New is the striking color Aloe. This green version is sure to make for an interesting topic of conversation.
Google is giving the Pixel 8a a starting price of €549. For this you get 128GB of storage. There is also a black version with 256GB of storage for €60 more. The device will be available from May 14, this time also in Dutch stores.
