In 2022, Apple released the iPhone 14 with Satellite SOS, an additional way to call for help via satellites in places without network coverage. It has already saved several lives. Despite rumors, major Android manufacturers have not followed suit. Google wants to change that, starting with the Pixel 9.
For anyone who goes out in nature, takes long walks, or climbs mountains, sending a message during an emergency can be very useful. Lifesaving even. While some countries have near nationwide network coverage, some others don't. Then, you can turn to satellites. For example using an iPhone 14 or later.
Apple's "Emergency SOS" has already saved a man who drove his car into a ravine, found lost mountaineers in the Alps, and rescued a family hiking in Mt. Hood National Forest who got stuck in bad weather. This should be enough reason for Android manufacturers to develop something similar, but to no avail.
Pixel 9 with Satellite SOS
And so Google picks up that role with the upcoming Pixel 9. We already knew, thanks to screenshots, that satellite support would be available for Android 15, so now we hear that the Pixel 9 series will be the first to support it.
This feature is possible thanks to the Samsung Exynos Modem 5400, a chip that supports satellite communications. The service's operation resembles that of Apple. An on-screen instruction helps you point your phone to the nearest satellite.
Google is not expected to announce the Pixel 9 with satellite communications until the fall of 2024. This will then happen simultaneously with the launch of Android 15.
