These features the Google Pixel 9a lacks
Google last week announced the budget-friendly Pixel 9a. An entry-level Pixel phone with Google AI features like Gemini as well as a good camera. But there are also things that are missing. Here's what we found.
But first, a compliment. Google has listened to people who prefer a slightly thicker phone if only they get a bigger battery in return. So inside the Pixel 9a is a 5,100 mAh battery, bringing its thickness to 8.9 millimeters. That's not overly thick, but it's also not wafer-thin like some other phones.

But perhaps this was done to get longer battery life. In fact, we learn that the 9a features an Exynos 5300 modem, while the other Pixel 9 phones have an Exynos 5400 modem. Why that matters? The newer Exynos 5400 modem is considerably more fuel efficient than the 5300, something we also see in the battery tests of the Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL.
No Pixel Screenshots either
Besides an older modem, there is another thing the Google Pixel 9a does not have that other Pixel 9 phones do. And that is Pixel Screenshots. This feature allows you to search through previously taken screenshots. This feature currently only works in English, German and Japanese in the following countries:
- Germany
- Ireland
- United Kingdom
- Australia
- Canada
- United States
- India
- Japan
- Malaysia
- Singapore
The lack of Pixel Screenshots is due to the 8 GB of RAM memory the Pixel 9a is equipped with. That is less than the 12-16 GB found on other Pixel 9 phones. Because of this, Google can only use a lighter version of Gemini; Nano XXS.
The Pixel 9a does have this
Despite the lack of these features, the Google Pixel 9a still seems to be a good deal for those looking for a smart phone with good camera features. For example, you just have access to Pixel Studio and Gemini Live. The device also comes with 7 years of Android upgrades and security updates.
