Google: Android 16 launch for June is on track

Android 16 is coming earlier than usual, in the second quarter of 2025 was expected. Now Google has named a month when Android 16 is expected.

Android 16 is expected at the end of the second quarter, in June to be exact. Google told Android Police that. Normally, Google launches a new Android version in the fall, usually around August.

Google has switched to a new development process called Trunk Stable. Instead of developers each working on their own project that later has to be molded into one update, everyone is now working on their own subproject within the same project. This should reduce problems during merging later. As a result, we will soon see two Android releases instead of one.

Uncertainty about Android shells

How this will affect Android manufacturers is still unclear. For example, it often takes a very long time after an Android release before manufacturers come out with their own shell update. For example, Samsung is still working on rolling out One UI 7 which is based on Android 15. Google released version 15 in October 2024, six months ago at the time of writing.

New Pixel phones?

Google also launched new Pixel phones around the launch of new Android versions. Whether the same will happen now is still unknown. Android 16 will likely be demonstrated during Google I/O that will take place this year on May 20. Usually, Google announced a new Pixel phone during its own event.
