Rear of Motorola Frontier with 200MP camera captured on photo

We've been writing about it for years; a phone with a 200 megapixel camera. Motorola seems to be the first to announce one. Images of this Motorola Frontier with a 200MP camera on the back first surfaced today.

For years we were stuck with 108MP. There is no shame in that, as we all know that more pixels does not automatically result in better pictures. But standing still means going backwards, so we have to keep moving forward. And since Samsung had already announced its 200MP ISOCELL HP1 camera sensor in December 2021, the wait was on for the first phone. Perhaps this Motorola Frontier is it.

And it's getting a rather familiar back. Because we recognised a Xiaomi 12 Pro in it. An aluminum camera module with an unmissable large sensor and some other sensors beneath it, separated by a thin hairline. In addition to the white version shown here, there also seems to be a black version.

Clearly, Motorola wants to focus on camera performance with this Frontier. How good these are remains to be seen; sample photos are not yet available. Samsung itself reported higher light sensitivity in the dark due to variable use of pixel binning of 2x2 or 4x4.

Furthermore, the words "OIS" and "f/2.2" are written on the module. So we can assume that the camera has optical image stabilization for sharper results and an aperture of up to f/2.2. The latter is rather on the dark side by today's standards but that doesn't say much at this point. The size of the sensor also largely determines how light sensitive the camera is.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor

The Motorola Frontier is further said to have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. This is currently Qualcomm's top model but it does not come without problems. In fact, the chipset is plagued by overheating problems. Reason for Qualcomm to possibly announce the "8 Gen 1 Plus" pretty soon. This Frontier may come too soon for that update.
