Since Google rolled out its Find My network, compatible trackers have not been running fast. Samsung is doing significantly better with its SmartThings network and SmartTag trackers, but those are only supported by Samsung Galaxy phones. This app changes that.
It is developer Kieron Quinn with his app uTag that makes the SmartTag 2 work with other Android phones as well. You won't find the app in the Google Play Store, but will have to download and install the APK via Github.

The only requirement is an Android phone running at least version 11. You can then use all the SmartTag features as if you were using a Galaxy phone. You can find the tracker faster if your device has UWB. The developer has even added additional features that the official Samsung app does not have;
Function | Description |
---|---|
Widgets | Display tag and location history on a map in a widget |
Custom Automations | Open apps, shortcuts, or perform tasks |
Offline Location | View last location and search for tag offline |
Wi-Fi Safe Areas | Use wifi network to mark an area as safe to leave tags behind |
Passive Mode | Receive only extended locationinformation |
Biometric Entry | Lock access with biometric login |
Custom Lost Mode URL | Use tag as NFC-tag and open URL when tapped |
Export Location History | Save location history for a tag in CSV |
Smartspacer Support | Display tag information in At a Glance (requires Smartspacer) |
It is obvious that Samsung will not be happy with the app. But since it is not distributed through official sources but must be installed itself, there will be little it can do about it.
New SmartTag
Samsung could only add extra security to future SmartTag models to prevent this. The SmartTag 2 was released in October of 2023, nearly three years after the release of the first generation SmartTag.
